Our club colours are old gold and royal blue. The running vests are royal blue and the shorts / skirts are old gold. The emblem and lettering on the clothing are old gold, not white. The colours/clothes are available at the clubhouse at Mbombela Stadium.
Our running year starts on 1 September, and lasts until 31 August of the following year. During this time, league points are awarded for time trials attended (total kms run) as well as official races run (total kms as well as how fast they are run). Monthly prizes are awarded for any given month’s achievements, while large prizes are in play for performance during the course of the entire year (e.g. Sportsman / Sportswoman of the year).
Please contact your team captain for more information on how these competitions work.
Nelspruit Marathon Club contact list:
Please ensure that we have your contact details so that we can keep you informed of happenings in the club. This will happen by means of a monthly newsletter (sent by e-mail, but also published on this website), or by periodic e-mails sent by the club admin officer, or communicated to you directly by your team captain (sometimes in person, usually by WhatsApp).
Also, please refer to the “Upcoming events and news” page on this website which will be updated regularly.
Upon joining the Club, you will be randomly assigned to a Club team (Teams 1 through 4). This is a little bit to facilitate communication but the four teams also compete against each other during the year in friendly competitions. Please get involved with your team and work together with your team captain.
Teams are also allocated specific months when they help out with club-related activities like timekeeping during time trials, or bar duty. Please help out when it is your turn. You’d like club members to treat you like the hero you are…but they deserve the same treatment in return.
You can find out which team you’re in, and who your team captains are, on this website or from the club admin officer. We also provide this information elsewhere on this page, so please have a look.
On the last Thursday of the month the club hosts a monthly braai where the club provides the fire, pap and sheba. You only have to bring cutlery, meat and your family or friends. Everybody is welcome. Time trials are run as usual, but we try to have the fire going by the time runners have completed their runs (well, the slower runners, anyway).
We have a few camping weekends during the course of the year. During a camping weekend, Club Members participate in a Saturday race but they then make a weekend out of it by camping at the venue or in the general area from Friday to Sunday. The primary camping weekend is the Loskop 21km/50km in April. This one is very big, and it also features the annual Sherry Run on Sunday. The term Sherry Run is self-evident, although Sherry can be replaced by Beverage of your choice in addition to Sherry while Run should probably be replaced by social amble. The term Sherry Run rolls off the tongue better, in addition to fitting on a T-shirt.
Other camping weekens include the Sudwala Screaming Monster (also in April, hosted by Legogote Villagers in White River), the Builders God’s Window in Graskop in October (also hosted by Legogote Villagers) and the Skukuza in August.
We provide more information on these camping weekends closer at the time.
There are 2 official time trials during the week: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 17:30. Distances are 3km, 6km or 9km.
There are timekeepers at each time trial, but it remains each athlete’s responsibility to see that his/her time and distance are recorded. Only the timekeepers and snoepie workers are allowed to run at a different time and still have their time trials officially recorded for league competition purposes.
Although we have a reasonably safe route, be careful and try to run in single file, and try not to run alone. Reflector belts are a good idea during the Winter months (April to September). Monthly prizes are awarded to runners who run the most time trials + races during the course of any given year.
Duties of league teams:
In addition to assisting with timekeeping occasionally, club members are also requested to assist when we host our annual races (especially the UniWisp-Kaapsehoop in November, which is our Flagship event).
Please make yourself available when it is your turn to work.
Club Championships will be held for the 2018/2019 running year, using the following races. This is in addition to the monthly competitions mentioned above, and the club’s “Sportsman/Sportswoman of the year” competition. The follow races are used in this competition.
